Originally a waterbed platform. I put my select comfort mattress on it. I did not install the rails that would be necessary if a waterbed is used and I did not install the headboard which has a bookshelf and lights that work (the last time I checked) I have LOST the hardware used to add the side and end boards and the headboard. Each side of the bed has two large drawers. On one of them, you will need to add and hammer a few small nails to keep the bottom of the drawer secure.
You can assemble the basic bed without headboard and rails WITH NO TOOLS!!!! All parts must go with you even if you don't think you will use the rails or headboard.
It's dark wood with wear and tear scratches. The internet says you can make them less visible in a variety of ways - crayon, coffee, markers. I will post pics if I can figure out how to do it.
