St Louis-Freecycle ADMIN: No Show RePosts

ADMIN: No Show RePosts

We have had many OFFERs lately that are quickly followed within minutes by a TAKEN. Then a few days later a repost of the same item because of a 'no show.' And then another quick TAKEN. From personal experience, whenever I have an OFFER, I receive no less than 7-10 (sometimes more) responses. We are a large group, it is very rare to not receive multiple responses to items being OFFERed.

For now on, when you post an OFFER, please save all the response emails. If the first person falls through (and we always recommend not picking the first responder) we ask you move to the next person. Each time you post, you are sending an email to close to 14,000 members, and overloading their email boxes. It is easier on everyone (Members, and Moderators alike) for you to save the hand full of emails you receive from people requesting your item. Then you can go down the list, but the constant reposting has to be controlled. Many groups have set time limits to the reposts of OFFERs to once every two weeks. We don't want to have to set a limit like that. So please, save those emails from responders.

Here is an ADMIN we sent out a few months ago:

Due to the number of members reposting items, due to No Shows, but in the same post stating 'the first to respond gets it.' I'd like to talk about how to pick a person who responds to your offer. There are a lot of methods to do this, but there are also good reasons NOT to pick the first person who responds.

Some people will actually sit in front of a computer and respond to any Offered item whether they need it or not. Often with the intent to sell it, or to get selected to receive it, then decide later if they want it or not.

Some people are using "auto respond", which means they have set up their computer to automatically send an email which says they are interested or will take an item when they get an email with the subject line of OFFER or Freecycle. This is why some have gone to asking for favorite color, song, etc. We ARE aware of this happening here on our list. This is just a good reason NOT to give to the first person who responds. Some great methods I have heard of, are: randomly picking a name, picking the person who seems to need it, but does not give a big sad story about it, or picking the (insert favorite number here) person who responds, OR or someone who just says Please. It's your item, it's your choice who receives it! And let's not forget about those who receive the posts via Daily Digest, they might not see your posting for a few hours. Also, please check your Spam folder for possible respones, as Yahoo sometimes sends response emails to Spam.

At the end of the day, it's up to the donor to determine to whom a particular item will be gifted. There is NO first-come, first-served policy. Having posted a Wanted for that same item does not give anyone "dibs" on it. We should always remember to treat any item received as the gift it is, and the donor with the courtesy and respect s/he deserves. And when you post 'first to email gets it', you stand a good chance of having to repost your item due to a No Show.
