Dear Pending Members,
We have we been receiving complaints from members receiving invitations at their Freecycle email addresses, we are also receiving invitations to the various networking sites at the group owner's address. If you don't read this email any further, be aware that anyone sending such invitations either publicly or privately to group members or moderators will be removed from the group. We don't want invitations to join you on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc. If you have received one, please fwd it to the email address:
StLouis-Freecycle-owner@yahoogroups.com .
There are a lot of "social group" sites on the internet that can hijack your address book. When joining one of these, you'll probably want to let them know that you do not want them contacting individuals in your address book.
Since you have a chance to CONFIRM this when you join, technically it's not classified as spamming by their site. However, they make this so hard for you to do, that people get tricked into leaving their address books vulnerable. So technically nothing is automatic; it's just that people signing up don't understand what's happening.
If you join one of these sites without knowing how to stop them, they can send messages to your entire address book whenever they please. These invitations hitting our group or our members are considered spam and are grounds for immediate removal of the "sender" from our group, so please make sure you hit the correct button when it comes to these groups.
